Board #11: 1 year into my Spotify – Power BI

Same board with different color choices

Hello!

I’m back with a new simple board made on Power BI, this time using my Spotify data (19/06/19 – 19/06/20)!

In case you don’t know, you can request for your data on Spotify’s website, then you receive cool data like: your streaming history, dates, playlists sheet, search queries, followers, payments.

As my activity on Spotify resumes to streaming (no followers, no payments…), I focused on analyzing my artists, songs and habits. Let’s see what I’ve got!

Questions & Answers

After cleaning the data and separating what I needed on the query editor, I ended up with 2 main tables: Streaming History and Playlists Data.

Using the dates column, I could build slicers to filter year (2019, 2020) and month, while using the playlists table I could slice by playlists. With those slicers, we can find more specific data and open up more results possibilities in the board.

Using the dates column I could also bring up details on my habits, showing on which day of the week I usually listen to Spotify the most (overall, Tuesdays!) and on which month of that year I listened the most (December, vacations!). These details change from artist to artist.

Day and month I streamed my top 5 artists the most:

  • Taeyeon: Saturday | April
  • Of Monsters and Men: Sunday | December
  • Halsey: Wednesday | February
  • Dua Lipa: Saturday | April
  • Schrottgrenze: Wednesday | March

Meanwhile, on the right of the board you can see for how many minutes I streamed: total 19.000 minutes (or 316 hours, or 13 days). This time data comes with each song, indicating which I listened entirely and which I jumped at some point.

About the Charts

The charts are very simple:

  • A bar chart showing the artists I listened to the most
  • 2 line charts (2019 and 2020) showing the number of songs I played by month
  • Not a chart, but: A list of the 4 songs I listened to the most

All of those change according to the filters/slicers and the other elements you click in the board.

Conclusions

The conclusion is that I was a very eclectic girl during that time! I got to listen to a lot of pop, indie rock, rap…even though I have always been a big hard rock/pop punk fan.

It’s very interesting to get to learn about these things, feels like I see my musical taste maturing and being broader. I really wonder how it will look like on next year’s analysis!
